.za Namespace Experiences Service Disruption
Due to High Traffic Load
Specifically impacting co.za domain names.
[Johannesburg, South Africa, 14 March 2025]:
The .za Domain Name Authority (.zadna) has been informed of a service disruption affecting the .za Namespace, specifically impacting co.za domain names.
The ZA Registry Consortium (ZARC), the Registry Operator for .za’s commercial second-level domains
(co.za, org.za, net.za, and web.za), experienced an unexpected surge in traffic to its nameservers, which
resulted in temporary service interruptions as automated security measures were activated to protect
against potential threats and maintain system stability.
Additionally, there have been reports of disruptions with Google’s public DNS services, which may have impacted domain resolution.
ZARC’s technical team is closely monitoring the situation and has already taken steps to mitigate the
impact, particularly on servers based in the United States. Additionally, measures have been put in place
to expand capacity and improve the infrastructure's resilience to better manage future traffic spikes.
.zadna is committed to ensuring the stability and security of the .za namespace and will continue to
monitor the situation. We urge all stakeholders, registrars, and users to stay informed by following real-time updates on the ZARC status page: https://status.zarc.net.za/.
The .ZA Domain Name Authority (.zadna) is a not-for-profit company established in terms of section 59 of the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act, 2002 (Act 25 of 2002). .zadna’s mandate is to regulate the .za namespace and ensure its efficient use, management, and administration. .zadna is accountable to its members and the South African Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT).
